1. Why doesn't my machine recognize a recently installed DIMM module?

Try reseating the DIMM. Make sure the DIMM notches are correctly lined up with the notches in the socket. Then, push straight down on the DIMM; make sure you push down with a reasonable amount of force (wrist strength not shoulder power). Often people are afraid to push down hard enough and the DIMM doesn't make full contact with the leads in the socket. It is important that the metal leads on the DIMM almost disappear into the socket.

2. What do those little numbers on the black chips mean?

Those numbers identify the type, size, and speed of that particular chip. Once this information is obtained, the module can be properly identified.

3. Will more memory speed up my computer?

More memory will not increase the speed of the CPU, but it will reduce the time a CPU spends waiting for information from a hard drive. Since RAM provides data to a CPU faster than a hard drive, you will not have to wait as long for programs to execute.

4. Will adding more memory speed up my printer?

No, adding more memory will not increase the PPM (page per minute) count. It will allow you to print larger documents and more detailed graphics.

5. If I add faster RAM to my computer, will it run faster?

At times, faster RAM can eliminate one or more wait states between the processor and memory. In a small number of cases, adding RAM that is 20ns faster than the speed specified in the owner's manual may result in the elimination of one wait state. However, this is not guaranteed, and your performance may vary. If your motherboard can use EDO RAM, then it should eliminate at least one wait state between the CPU and the memory.

6. What will work better in my system; tin or gold plated SIMM leads?

It is always best to match the color leads in the socket with the color leads on the SIMM. Both the tin and gold leads conduct well, and they will both work in the SIMM socket, but there is more potential for a corrosion problem when the tin and gold metals come into contact with each other. Corrosion could occur over months, even years, so please keep this in mind if you decide to mix the metals.

7. What is the thermal grease used for?

Thermal grease is used to reduce the air gap between a CPU and a cooling fan, thus improving the cooling process.

8. What does "buffered" mean?

Buffered means adding logic, particularly drivers, to a SIMM or DIMM to increase the output current. Buffering is used to overcome signal attenuation due to capacitive loading. Modules that are "buffered" usually have small buffer chips mounted on them.

9. What does the number within the parenthesis ( ) mean on some of your parts such as the 8x32-60 (16) 2K [32MB] or the 4x8-70 (8) [4MB]?

The number within the parenthesis is the number of IC (Integrated Circuit) chips that are found on the module.

10. Why are some of your parts referred to as "kits," such as part #15547?

Some memory kits that we sell come with installation instructions, an anti-static wrist strap, and may contain multiple pieces of memory.
